What Are RPMT and Related Round Milling Inserts?

RPMT is one of several round indexable milling insert families used for profile milling, copy milling, pocketing, surfacing and related contour operations. This page also includes RPMW, RDMT, RDMW and RPGT models from the same round-insert product group.

The family code identifies the round shape, relief angle, tolerance and clamping/chip-form configuration. The following size and suffix characters identify the exact insert. Models with the same nominal diameter are not automatically interchangeable because thickness, relief angle, hole geometry and pocket seating can differ.

RPMW, RPMT, RDMT, RDMW and RPGT are separate complete designations. Match the full insert code, dimensions and relief angle to the exact cutter pocket.

RPMW, RPMT, RDMT, RDMW and RPGT Insert Models

Compare every listed round insert by inscribed-circle diameter, thickness, hole diameter, relief angle, geometry and grade options. The complete designation must be retained when requesting a quotation or replacement.

How to Compare the Models

Start with the exact cutter pocket, then confirm IC, T, D, relief angle and the complete geometry suffix. Similar 8, 10 or 12 mm models can use different thicknesses and relief angles.

MO, MO-JS, MOTN and MO-AK are retained as part of the complete model. Do not shorten these designations when ordering.

Family Comparison

RPMW, RPMT, RDMT, RDMW and RPGT Are Separate Insert Families

The shared round shape does not make these models universally interchangeable. Relief angle, tolerance, thickness, hole geometry and cutter-pocket seating must all match.

RPMW / RPMT

11° Positive Round Inserts

  • RPMW uses MO geometry in 8, 10 and 12 mm sizes.
  • RPMT uses MO-JS geometry in 8, 10 and 12 mm sizes.
  • These are the primary families matched to compatible EMR round nose cutters.
RDMT / RDMW

15° Relief Round Inserts

  • RDMT is listed in 8, 10 and 12 mm MOTN models.
  • RDMW covers 6, 10, 12 and 16 mm MO models.
  • Confirm a cutter designed for the 15° relief family.
RPGT

D01 Non-Ferrous Models

  • MO-AK geometry in 8, 10 and 12 mm sizes.
  • D01 grade is listed for the complete range.
  • Use for compatible aluminum and non-ferrous cutter systems.
Carbide Grade Direction

Round Insert Grade Options by Machining Condition

First confirm that the grade is offered for the exact RPMW, RPMT, RDMT, RDMW or RPGT model, then select the grade direction according to workpiece material, stability and wear mode.

D530

Steel and cast-iron direction where edge toughness and interrupted-cut reliability are important.

D570

General steel and stainless-steel direction, including stable and finishing-oriented work.

D580

Steel and cast-iron direction for selected stable machining and wear-resistance requirements.

D7320

General-purpose direction across steel, stainless steel and cast iron.

D9920S

Available on selected 10 and 12 mm models for hardened and difficult-material machining directions.

D01

Grade option for the RPGT MO-AK range used in aluminum and non-ferrous machining directions.

Grade availability is model-specific. D9920S is listed for RPMW1003MO, RPMW1204MO and RDMT1204MOTN. D01 is listed only for the RPGT MO-AK models.
Compatible Cutter Direction

Match RPMW and RPMT Inserts to EMR Cutter Bodies

EMR round nose end mills and face milling cutters are organized around RPMW and RPMT insert-circle sizes. Confirm the exact body code, pocket, screw and full insert designation before ordering. RDMT, RDMW and RPGT require cutter bodies specifically designed for those families.

R4

8 mm / 08T2 Platform

Match compatible EMR R4 round nose end mills to the 08T2 pocket. Review RPMW08T2MO and RPMT08T2MO-JS dimensions before selection.

R5

10 mm / 1003–10T3 Platform

Used across compatible EMR R5 round nose end mills and selected face milling bodies. Confirm whether the pocket requires RPMW1003 or RPMT10T3.

R6

12 mm / 1204 Platform

Match compatible EMR R6 face milling cutters to RPMT1204 dimensions and the required MO or MO-JS model.

Do not place RDMT, RDMW or RPGT into an EMR pocket specified for RPMW/RPMT unless the exact cutter-body documentation confirms compatibility.
Profile and Copy Milling

Round Milling Insert Applications

Round cutting edges distribute load continuously as the engagement point moves around the insert. Actual capability and maximum depth depend on the selected cutter-body design, relief family and pocket orientation.

01

Profile Milling

For curved surfaces, contours and changing engagement angles in compatible round-insert cutters.

Profile milling tools
02

Copy Milling

For die, mould and freeform-surface machining where the tool follows complex 3D geometry.

03

Pocketing and Ramping

For compatible cutters designed for axial entry, ramping, helical interpolation and residual-stock removal.

04

Face and Surface Milling

For EMR face milling bodies using 10 mm or 12 mm round inserts to machine broad surfaces.
