Product Size Overview

Metric and Inch Carbide End Mill Sizes

End mill size selection affects slot width, corner clearance, cutting depth, tool rigidity, surface finish and tool life. A suitable size should be selected according to the part feature, workpiece material, machine condition and required tolerance.

ONMY catalogue drawings use D for cutting diameter, d for shank diameter, L for overall length and H for flute length. Ball nose end mills also require ball radius, while corner radius end mills require the R value.

Catalogue Dimension Codes

How to Read ONMY End Mill Dimensions

ONMY catalogue drawings use D, d, L and H to describe the main carbide end mill dimensions. Please use these codes when sending drawings, RFQs or tool size requirements.

Replace with ONMY catalogue dimension drawing /wp-content/uploads/end-mill-dimension-codes-D-d-L-H.jpg
D = cutting diameter, d = shank diameter, L = overall length, H = flute length
D

Cutting Diameter

D is the cutting diameter or flute diameter. It determines slot width, pocket corner clearance and the machined feature size.

d

Shank Diameter

d is the shank diameter. It must match the collet, holder or chuck and affects clamping stability and runout control.

L

Overall Length

L is the overall tool length. It affects reach, setup length and tool rigidity during CNC milling.

H

Flute Length

H is the flute length or cutting edge length. It should match the required cutting depth without making the tool unnecessarily weak.

Example format: D6 × H15 × d6 × L50 means 6mm cutting diameter, 15mm flute length, 6mm shank diameter and 50mm overall length.

Selection Guide

How to Choose End Mill Diameter and Length

The best end mill size is not always the largest or longest tool. Choose the diameter and length that meet the part feature while maintaining tool rigidity and chip evacuation.

Machining Requirement Recommended Size Direction Selection Notes
Narrow slot or grooveDiameter close to the slot widthConfirm tolerance and whether multiple passes are needed for better finish.
Small precision feature1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm or custom micro end millRunout, clamping and conservative cutting parameters are important.
Flat-bottom pocketSquare end mill diameter based on pocket corner clearanceCheck internal corner radius limits because an end mill cannot create a perfectly sharp inside corner.
3D contouring or mold surfaceBall nose diameter and ball radius based on surface detailSmaller ball radius gives finer detail but may require longer machining time.
Stronger edge requirementCorner radius end mill with suitable R valueLarger radius can strengthen the edge but must fit the part corner geometry.
Deep cavity or deep wallShortest possible long reach or long shank toolLong overhang increases deflection risk; review cutting depth, holder and machine rigidity.
Non-standard drawingCustom carbide end mill sizeSend the drawing, sample or CAD requirement for manufacturing review.

Need a Non-Standard End Mill Size?

ONMY can review custom carbide end mill sizes according to drawing, sample or machining application. Custom options include diameter, flute length, overall length, shank diameter, ball radius, corner radius, coating, flute count, marking and packaging.

FAQ

End Mill Sizes FAQ

What are common end mill sizes?

Common carbide end mill sizes include small metric diameters such as 1mm, 2mm and 3mm, general metric sizes such as 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm, and inch sizes such as 1/8, 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch.

How do I choose end mill diameter?

Choose the end mill diameter according to the slot width, pocket corner clearance, part geometry, workpiece material and required rigidity. For tight corners or small features, smaller diameters or custom tools may be required.

What is the difference between flute length and overall length?

Flute length is the cutting length of the tool, while overall length is the full tool length from tip to shank end. A longer overall length provides more reach, but excessive overhang can increase vibration and deflection.

What size end mill should I use for a 1/4 inch slot?

A 1/4 inch end mill can be used as a starting point for a 1/4 inch slot, but tolerance, material, tool deflection and finishing allowance should be reviewed before final selection.

How do I convert inch end mill sizes to metric sizes?

Multiply the inch size by 25.4 to get millimeters. For example, a 1/4 inch end mill is approximately 6.35mm. You can use the converter on this page for quick metric and inch size reference.

Do you provide 1mm, 2mm and 3mm end mills?

Yes. ONMY can support small diameter carbide end mills such as 1mm, 2mm and 3mm through standard or custom micro end mill options, depending on tool shape, material and coating requirement.

How do I choose ball nose end mill size?

For ball nose end mills, confirm both the tool diameter and ball radius. Smaller ball radius tools can produce finer surface details, while larger tools may be more stable and efficient for broader surfaces.

Can you make custom end mill sizes?

Yes. ONMY supports custom carbide end mill sizes according to drawing, sample or machining application, including diameter, flute length, overall length, shank diameter, ball radius, corner radius, coating and flute count.
