Insert Identification

What Is a WNMU Milling Insert?

WNMU is a double-sided trigon-shaped indexable milling insert family with three cutting edges on each side, providing six usable edges in compatible cutter bodies.

The complete designation identifies the insert shape, relief direction, tolerance, clamping form, size and geometry. WNMU040304, WNMU060408 and WNMU080608 use different pockets and cannot be selected only from the word “WNMU”.

EN, EN-ZL and EN-GH are retained as parts of the complete model. Use the full designation when ordering or checking cutter compatibility.

How to Use the Specifications

Start from the cutter pocket and current insert code. Confirm every dimension and retain the complete EN, EN-ZL or EN-GH geometry when requesting a replacement.

Grade availability is model-specific. Do not assume that every grade is offered for every WNMU size or geometry.

Carbide Grade Direction

WNMU Grade Options by Material and Cutting Condition

First select a grade that is available for the complete WNMU model, then match the grade direction to the workpiece material, machining stability and wear mode.

D530

Steel and cast-iron direction where toughness and interrupted-cut reliability are important.

D570

General steel and stainless-steel direction, including stable and finishing-oriented machining.

D580

Steel and cast-iron direction for selected stable machining conditions.

D8420A

Stable cast-iron machining direction, available on selected WNMU080608 geometries.

D9920S

Hardened and difficult-material direction, available on WNMU080608EN-ZL.

Cutter Compatibility

Match WNMU Inserts to MFWN Milling Cutters

The WNMU size must match the complete cutter-body model, pocket, screw and geometry. Do not select the insert only from the cutter diameter.

04

MFWN04 Platform

Uses WNMU040304EN in compatible compact right-angle milling cutter holders.

06

MFWN06 Platform

Uses WNMU060408EN in compatible medium-size right-angle milling cutter holders.

0806

MFWN / FMWN Platform

Uses WNMU080608 models in compatible face mills and FMWN R/L cutter bodies.

The complete cutter model determines the correct WNMU geometry. Confirm the pocket before changing between EN, EN-ZL and EN-GH.

Why Use a Double-Sided 6-Edge WNMU Insert?

The trigon design provides three cutting corners on each side. Indexing both sides gives six usable edges when the insert and cutter pocket remain in suitable condition.

Six Usable EdgesThree cutting corners on each side.
Double-Sided SeatingEconomical use of both insert faces.
Lower Cost per EdgeMore indexed edges from one insert.
Stable Pocket SupportDesigned for compatible MFWN cutter seating.
Fewer Insert ChangesMultiple edges before replacing the insert.
Efficient 90° MillingShouldering and facing in suitable cutter systems.
