Product Overview
Meet the rigorous demands of the aviation industry with our UNJ Unified Aerospace laydown threading inserts. Unlike standard UN threads, the UNJ profile is defined by a controlled, larger root radius on the external thread and a larger minor diameter on the internal thread. This specific geometry significantly improves the fatigue strength of the component, making it mandatory for many aerospace applications.
These carbide threading inserts are “Full Profile,” meaning they cut the thread groove, the controlled root radius, and top the crest in a single pass to ensure absolute conformity to aerospace standards.
Key Features & Benefits
- Aerospace Compliance: Engineered strictly to meet UNJ standards (e.g., MIL-S-8879 class 3A/3B), preventing failure in high-stress environments.
- Standard Compatibility: The popular 16er threading inserts series covers the most common aerospace pitches (32-8 TPI), fitting standard ISO tool holders.
- Precision Geometry: The high-precision ground cutting edge ensures the critical root radius is maintained throughout the tool’s life.
- Directional Options: We provide comprehensive solutions including left hand thread insert (EL/IL) models for specialized aerospace fasteners.

Machining Guidelines
- UN vs. UNJ: Do not use standard UN threading inserts for UNJ applications. The root radius on UNJ inserts is larger; using a standard UN insert can result in stress risers and part rejection.
- Internal Threading: Be aware that UNJ internal threads require a larger pre-drilled hole (minor diameter) than standard UN threads to accommodate the external thread’s larger root radius.
- Setup: Ensure your threading inserts for lathe setup is rigid. Aerospace alloys (like Inconel or Titanium) often machined with UNJ threads can work-harden if the cut is not consistent.
