Radial Chip Thinning Calculator
Calculate radial chip thinning factors and adjusted milling feed per tooth for light radial engagement.

Results use the inputs above; example values are illustrative and are not tool-specific speed/feed recommendations.
Formulas and Calculation Method
For ae/D < 0.5: RCTF = 1 / sqrt[1 − (1 − 2ae/D)²]; fz = chip thickness × RCTF. Otherwise RCTF = 1.
For conventional side milling with small ae relative to D, maximum chip thickness becomes less than programmed feed per tooth. A radial chip-thinning correction increases feed per tooth so the peak chip thickness remains close to the chosen target. Above half-diameter radial engagement the radial compensation factor is 1.
Important Assumptions and Limitations
Assumes a 90-degree side-milling geometry and simplified engagement. Does not independently account for helix angle, axial chip thinning, machine acceleration, cutter deflection or unusually small engagements where rubbing dominates. Confirm machine power and tool limits.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I apply radial chip thinning?
Typically when radial engagement is less than half of the cutter diameter.
Is this automatically safe at every engagement?
No. Check cutter geometry, material, machine power, stability and recommended tool data.
