CBN Tipped Inserts
Brazed PCBN inserts with localized or extended CBN cutting edges for hard turning and cast-iron machining. Compare tip structure, ISO shape, insert code and application before selecting the PCBN grade.
Brazed PCBN / CBN Tipped Construction
A CBN tipped insert uses a PCBN cutting section joined to an indexable insert body. Selection starts with the number of usable tips or the required PCBN edge length, then continues to ISO shape, workpiece material and cutting condition.
Choose the CBN Tip Structure
Tip count and PCBN edge length affect usable cutting positions, supported engagement and cost per usable edge. They do not determine cutting speed or depth of cut by themselves.

1-Tip CBN Inserts
One defined PCBN cutting corner for straightforward orientation and application-specific use.

2-Tip CBN Inserts
Two usable PCBN tips can improve cost per cutting edge when both cutting positions are accessible.

3-Tip CBN Inserts
Three-corner PCBN options for selected triangle and trigon insert families.

Entire-Edge PCBN Inserts
Extended PCBN cutting edge for applications that need wider edge engagement than a localized tip.

Long-Edge PCBN Inserts
Long-edge D-type versions provide additional usable PCBN length for selected profile and engagement requirements.

Chipbreaker PCBN Inserts
Selected ISO families use chipbreaker geometry where chip formation and control are part of the application requirement.
Browse CBN Tipped Inserts by ISO Shape
Start with the holder-compatible insert shape, then confirm the exact size, tip configuration and grade in the code section below.
C-Type 80° Rhombic
Stable geometry for general turning, facing and hard finishing.
D-Type 55° Rhombic
Profile access with 1N, 2N, long-edge and chipbreaker options.
S-Type Square
Rigid square geometry for stable turning and multiple structure options.
T-Type Triangle
Multi-corner geometry with 1N, 3N and selected entire-edge versions.
V-Type 35° Rhombic
Sharp profile access for contours and restricted component geometry.
W-Type Trigon
Multi-corner insert body for stable turning and cost-per-edge selection.

This is a representative code list, not the complete catalog matrix. PCBN grade and tip-structure availability varies by insert size.
Choose CBN Tipped Inserts by Application
After the insert body and tip structure are known, use the workpiece and cutting continuity to choose the PCBN grade and edge condition.

Hardened Steel
Choose by workpiece hardness, cutting continuity, surface requirement and edge security.

Grey & Hard Cast Iron
Match the grade to cast structure, abrasion, boring or turning operation and interruption.

Continuous / Light Interrupted
Emphasize wear resistance, dimensional consistency and controlled edge wear in stable cuts.

Moderate / Heavy Interrupted
Prioritize tougher grade direction, secure edge preparation and a rigid machining setup.
Select the Grade After the Insert Structure
Tip structure does not replace grade selection. Use the workpiece material and cutting continuity to choose the PCBN grade, then confirm availability for the required insert code.
| Grade | Approx. CBN Content | Selection Direction | Application Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBN45 | 45% | Wear-focused finish machining | Continuous to moderately interrupted hard turning |
| O2C50 | 50% | Abrasion resistance | Continuous to lightly interrupted hard machining |
| OBW85 | 85% | Strength, abrasion and chip resistance | Grey-iron fine boring, valve seats and demanding abrasive workpieces |
| OMB90 | 90% | High wear resistance | Grey / hard cast iron and selected hardened-steel machining |
For detailed application selection, use the Hard Turning or Cast Iron pages. Grade availability varies by insert code and tip configuration.
Tipped PCBN vs Full-Face or Solid CBN
These are different construction categories. Full-face and solid CBN should not be grouped automatically under brazed tipped inserts.
CBN Tipped / Brazed PCBN
Localized or extended PCBN cutting sections on indexable insert bodies. Common selection variables include 1N / 2N / 3N tip count, entire-edge or long-edge structure, ISO body and cost per usable cutting edge.
Full-Face / Solid CBN
Uses a larger PCBN cutting body or face. Select this construction only when the application benefits from additional usable CBN material, cutting-edge engagement or a machining strategy that cannot be handled efficiently with a conventional tipped insert.
What to Send for CBN Tipped Insert Selection
A useful recommendation needs the complete insert requirement and machining condition, not only a shape code.
