Metal Removal Rate Calculator (MRR)
Calculate theoretical metal removal rate for milling, drilling or turning and compare cubic centimeters per minute with cubic inches per minute.

Results use the inputs above; example values are illustrative and are not tool-specific speed/feed recommendations.
Formulas and Calculation Method
Milling: Q = ap × ae × vf / 1000; drilling: Q = πD² × rpm × fn / 4000; turning: Q = vc × ap × fn.
MRR measures the theoretical volume of metal removed each minute while the cut is engaged. For milling it is width times depth times table feed. For drilling it is the bore cross-sectional area multiplied by axial feed. Turning commonly uses cutting speed multiplied by radial depth and feed per revolution as a standard approximation.
Important Assumptions and Limitations
MRR alone is not spindle power or maximum machine capacity. Turning calculations assume steady diameter and engagement; tool entry and exit are neglected. Do not use MRR to infer recommended feeds without the proper tool and material data.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does MRR account for actual machine utilization?
No. It describes instantaneous engaged cutting, not the whole-cycle average.
Can higher MRR require more power?
Generally yes; the cutting force and material-specific cutting energy must also be considered.
