Milling Chip Load Calculator
Calculate actual feed per tooth, feed per revolution and table feed from spindle speed and cutter flute count.
Online Calculator
Results use the inputs above; example values are illustrative and are not tool-specific speed/feed recommendations.
Formulas and Calculation Method
fz = vf / (RPM × z); vf,target = fz,target × RPM × z.
Chip load is commonly discussed as the programmed feed per tooth in standard 90-degree milling with sufficient radial engagement. It is distinct from the actual maximum chip thickness under light radial engagement or non-90-degree cutting angles. Use the target chip load supplied for your carbide end mill, material and operation.
Important Assumptions and Limitations
Does not include radial chip thinning, corner engagement, approach-angle effects or runout between cutting teeth; use the separate radial chip-thinning calculator when ae is below half the diameter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is feed per tooth the same as feed per revolution?
No. Feed per revolution equals feed per tooth times the effective number of flutes.
Can I use any target chip load?
No. Use a value appropriate to the cutter diameter, material, flute geometry and application.
